In 1085, in the place where
the Basilica is erected,
appeared a statue of a virgin which
received the name of “Virgen del Puy”. The Basilica was a royal patronage and
the Kings of Spain preserved it until 1895, when the Regent Queen renounces to it on behalf of Pamplona’s Bishop. The current building replaced an earlier one, that was built in Latin cross floor plan and a straight head apse which was added a small chapel. In 1929 the construction of the actual Basilica began under the direction and project of
the architect Victor Eusa. A few years later, in 1949, there was a restructuring of the first layout by the same architect. Works were finished in 1951. The entrance and the previous courtyard are from the 18th century. In one side is the Generals room taking its name of the Carlists Generals that waited there before being executed by another
Carlist General, Maroto, in 1839. The neo-Gothic building was erected in a
star-shaped plan evoking the origin of the Virgin’s appearance. It is a sedentary statue dated from the last third of the 13th century made on wood and silver-plated.
