History of Estella-Lizarra

Puy´s Basilic

    It is in the same century, in 1483 when Estella-Lizarra achieves rank of city. When the king was proclaimed, he was raised on a shield, so the mayor or his delegate got the privilege of holding the same ring of the shield than the mayor of Pamplona.

    After the annexation of Navarre by the King Fernando of Castille in 1512, peace and stability favoured the social development of the populario and the economy.

    During the 17th and 18th centuries, the city was quiet until the 19thcentury. After the Independence war it became the epicenter of the Carlists wars. In Los Llanos Park Tomás Zumalacárregui was proclaimed Major General . I n 1839, behind Basílica del Puy , some Generals that did not wanted to sign the Pact of Vergara were executed by firearm by General Maroto.

    The 3rd Carlist war lasted from 1872 till 1876, being being Estella after its occupation, capital city of the court of Carlos VII.

    The 20th century, after the civil war, supposed the beginning of the economic prosperity mostly in the 70´s, when a process of urban change started, keeping its medieval essence.
